Office 2007 SP1 installation fails near end

How much free space is require for Office 2007 SP1 to install successfully.
I had about 500 MB free but it keeps failing, and even though I keep trying
to temporarily create more space, each failed install seem to grab up more
and more free space so I'm fighting a losing battle.

I installed the Windowsinstaller 3.1, so I don't think it's that. The
install gets right to the very end, just short of the progress bar going all
the way, and it fails over and over.

Any ideas?

Try to free up some space:

For client installations of the 2007 Office system SP1, the minimum
requirements are:
-Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP SP2, or Windows Vista®
-Windows Installer 3.1
-The 2007 Microsoft Office system
-Administrative credentials on the local computer
-Free disk space on the system partition:
+On Windows XP, approximately 1.1 GB of free disk space is required when
downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.
+On Windows Vista, approximately 1.75 GB of free disk space is required when
downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.
+For other 2007 Office system SP1 packages, the free disk space requirement
will be roughly five to six times the size of the Microsoft Self-Extractor
file. Required disk space when installing via Microsoft Update or Office
Update will be slightly less. Most of this disk space will be returned after
the installation is complete

Same problem here ! It seems it fails to commit
Microsoft.Office.Interop.Powerpoint into the GAC

During installation of Office SP1 I am getting same error. Error code:
0x78F. My computer has plenty of memory (1gb ram, 35gb free HD space) but
fails to install. Install fails about 1/4 way. Any ideas?

Strangely I'm getting the exact same error as Craig. I even tried downloading
it manually and installing it, but no go... Error code 78F all the time

Re: Error 78F: At this time, from what we've gathered, the temporary
solution is to have
the CD in the drive at the time of SP1 installation. So, if anyone you know
is having this same problem, have them put the CD in the drive - it should
enable the installation of SP1.

This did not work. I inserted the install CD into the drive and tried again.
I get "The install of this package failed" with no error code. SP1
successfully installed on my laptop but not my desktop. Both are running XP
PRO with SP2.

This is an update to my previous post. I was able to successfully install
SP1 by uninstalling/re-installing Office 2007. After I did this I rebooted
and installed SP1. Install was successful.

I am having the same problem installing Office 2007 SP1. I am running XP Pro
SP2.

I've tried installing from auto-update, downloading the file and installing
directly, then running a Office 2007 repair. All tried have failed.

I do not have a installation disc because my program was downloaded from the
upgrade site.

Help.

I am very interested to hear that you installed SP1. Are you sure? Check the
file versions to be certian you have actually upgraded. A false intall is
common.
I have not yet met a user who successfully upgraded and verified Offcie 2007
SP1.

You don't have to reinstall or repair or do anything. Just put a data CD
(any data cd... could even be random files you're backing up on disk)
into your CD drive, and start the installation of the service pack. It
should work
