Office 2007 suddenly running in 256 color

P

Protista

I have a computer that is running Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise edition in
Windows XP Pro SP2. The problem occurring is that the whole office program
appears to be running in 256 mode as if the properties for WINWORD.EXE had
256 color mode checked under compatibility. However, the 256 color mode box
is not checked. It can be run as a regular administrator and domain
administrator and it behaves the same. We have also tried changing color
schemes and running office diagnostics with no results.
We are more than likely going to try to remove and reinstall office.
Hopefully that should resolve the problem for the time being. However, I
wanted to know if anyone else has encountered this problem and if there are
any known solutions.

If high contrast is turned on in Windows Accessibility Options, turn it off.

Right-click your desktop, choose Properties, and on the Settings tab, make
sure color quality is set to 32-bit. If it is already, try changing to a
lower setting, apply it, then change back to 32-bit.

Someone else reported something similar here.

Once again thanks for the advice. The picture in that thread is what is
happening with the office application, and it is in fact on all of them not
just word. I tried adjusting color settings and it is still maintaining its
appearance.

Well, I confess -- this is a problem that we've been seeing intermittent
reports of, and it's been bugging me, but none of the posters have followed
it to resolution so we don't have a definite fix. The one guy said "noodling
around with color schemes and such" resolved it for him, but I sure don't
know what that means! :)

You've changed Office color schemes and you've run Office diagnostics.

High contrast is not checked in the Windows accessibility settings.
Adjusting color to 32-bit doesn't fix it.

If you right-click the desktop, choose properties, and go to the Themes tab,
what Windows theme is specified? If you choose a different one, apply it,
and then change back to the one you were using, does that sort it out? How
about on the Appearance tab -- what Windows and buttons style and color
scheme are set there?

Have you rebooted?

state and running once again. I also rebooted the system again just for to
be sure. Unfortunately it is still remaining obstinate.

I did change color schemes/themes in both Windows and Office.

A variation on the same theme:

Try changing the color setting in Windows to 256 colors, apply that, start one or more Office apps, then close them down.
Finally, reset Windows to 32-bit color.

Thanks for the input. I went ahead and ran through with your scenario. I
ran it once before the change, once after setting it to 256 color, and once
again after bringing it back up to 32-bit. Unfortunately, it still looks
