Office 2007 too slow: Is it because of compatibility mode?

Greetings. I recently switched to Office 2007 (from Office 2003).

One noticeable (and very annoying) difference thus far has been the
extremely slow launch (or opening a file) compared with 2003.

Could this be because of the compatibility mode? Is it possible to turn it
off?

I haven't noticed any difference. But, it's easy to save a file as a .docx
file. Open one of your Office 2003 files and then Save As... See if there is
any difference. If there is no noticeable difference, then that is not the
cause.
