Office 2007 Uninstallation Glitch - BETA 2 -

After using it for 3 weeks, which worked fine, , , I decided to uninstall it
*for now*, because it was just a tad slow . .

However, now after a reboot when I try to spawn an instance of Office 2003
Professional (which it installed parallel to, during the installation of 2k7
beta 2), I get the following error:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong
version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software.
Please reinstall outlook.

Start Windows in safe mode. Rename or delete the MSMAPI32.DLL
file (Note: do not rename or delete the MAPI32.DLL file). Restart
Windows in normal mode and start Outlook.

Cool, I'll keep that in mind.

Until you responded I used this method from this website:

MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong version
If you mistakenly installed Outlook 2007; and now wants to use Outlook 2003
again; you might get the said error...To fix this

Uninstall Outlook 2007
Archive mapi32.dll from %SYSTEM32% and then delete it
Run %SYSTEM32%\fixmapi.exe
Archive %PROGRAMFILES%\Common Files\System\MSMAPI folder; and then delete
the whole folder
Reinstall Office 2003
Run Outlook 2003; it will take a while to load; let it do what it wants to...

Did I potentially break anything, or is this ok?
Because this mentions deleteing mapi32.dll not msmapi32.dll, after copying
it to a temp location.

Did you already reinstall Outlook 2003?
Office 2007 setup automatically removed Outlook 2003, as no two versions
of Outlook can be on the same computer, ever.

yep

after following that method, i reinstalled

and everything works fine now

If possible, would be nice to fix this in a future beta, only because most
newbs and non tech savy people don't come to technet forums to figure out
workarounds, since d/l the beta is now being marketed to the masses.

There is nothing really here that Microsoft can fix.
Quite frankly, I don't understand why people are downloading a beta
version and installing it just like this. Beta does not mean free
software. It seems to me that the word Beta has lost its meaning with
all the software that is marketed as beta but isn't really...

Quite frankly, I don't understand why people are downloading a beta
version and installing it just like this

1) What do you expect when MS advertises beta software more aggressively
than some companies advertise their final RC's?
2) Doesn't MS want to know what compatibility problems exist and what work
around exist? If everyone simply refreshed their image the first time that
their computer crashed with a piece of beta code, code fixes would move a lot
more slowly from my lay perspective.
3) Shall I get started on the mandatory install of the "beta" software known
to all as Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications software?!!!!?
4) Instead of blaming users for installing beta software on production PC's,
MS should return to the old days of qualifying beta testers through deep
linked online registration programs instead of pushing it on users on their
home page as if it is a ready for prime time release! IE 7 beta2 is
advertised on the MS home page like it is "must watch TV" However, I found
it to be as unstable as nitro on my box!!!

Stop yelling at users for installing beta software and help them if you can!
If you can't, keep you irritation to yourself!

There doesn't exist a compatibility problem here. Whenever you install a
newer version of Outlook, the older one is removed. It's pretty simple.
3) Shall I get started on the mandatory install of the "beta" software known

Please. I was blaming the marketing of beta software as usable software
as well if you read my original post. In that category falls a lot of
Google stuff, Windows Defender, etc.

There is such a beta program for Office 2007. I am in it and quite
frankly, the average user definitely would not have wanted to use Beta 1
back in November.

By the way, this is from the page where you downloaded Office 2007:
About Beta Software

* Registration is required for participation.
* 2007 Microsoft Office system Beta 2 is for evaluation and planning
purposes only.
* Beta software does not necessarily display the same high level of
stability of shipped Microsoft products.
* Beta testers may experience problems with 2007 Microsoft Office
system Beta 2 products that could potentially result in loss,
corruption, or destruction of existing data.
* This beta testing release is not appropriate for production use.
* It is strongly recommended that you back up your existing data
before you install and run this software.
* Beta code is offered "as is," and does not include technical
support.
* Many organizations have policies prohibiting unauthorized software
installation on company-owned computers. Make sure you check with your
IT department before downloading and installing 2007 Microsoft Office
system Beta 2 on your computer at work.
