I have Office 2003 (not 2007), Microsoft keeps wanting to download and
install updates for Office 2007. Why and what do I need to do to stop this.
Please help!!!

Do you have the Compatibility Pack for Office 2007 system installed? If
yes, this is why you are offered Office 2007 updates.

Yes , If you have installed Office Copatibility pack installed for
office 2007 then it may be possible that it ask your for these
updates......... or you have installed one of the application of office
20007 like outlook 2007 or MS word 2007

Same problem on all three of my systems - I've never install any
"compatibility packs" and everything I have is from either Windows XP
Professional (SP2) or Office XP Professional (SP3) CDs which were
contentedly updated until yesterday. I also have Frontpage XP/2002. No
interest in Office 2007. The Office 2007 update is marked as "hidden" for
now, but - of course - I'm getting the alert about hiding important updates
every time I visit the Microsoft Update site.

No doubt, something we have installed is triggering the Office 2007 SP1
upgrade offering...some file or registry entry...

FWIW, the Office 2007 SP1 download I am being offered is 50.1MB in size (a
single file). This is considerably smaller than what many others have
noted. Perhaps this indicates a more modest update to some minor component,
rather than a full-blown update to the entire Office 2007 package.

Until I know what Office XP or Windows component is to be updated, I'll hold
off for now. If no more information emerges, I can always do Ghost backup
and run the update to see what happens...

Longshot then, but do you have any of the 2007 viewers installed (word,
powerpoint, or visio). Other than that, I can only say for certain that
the compatibility pack for ofice 2007 does trigger the offering of Office
2007 SP1.

No viewers of any kind installed (other than what might have come on the
original Windows XP or Office XP CDs). I did "install" (i.e. copy) a text
converter (DOSWRD32.CNV) into the \Microsoft Shared\TextConv folder so I can
load my collection of older DOS Word documents. Certainly nothing was
installed related to Office 2007 - "compatibility" or otherwise - I'm as
indifferent to Office 2007 as I was to Office 2003. Office XP is more than
adequate for my needs (as is Windows XP)

Will keep watching for any further developments...
