Can Microsoft Office MAC 2008 be installed on a Powerbook G4 (Version
10.411, 1Ghz Power PC, 1 MB Hard, 512 MB RAM.) And if so, 2004 is already in
my computer, so what would I need to do?

It sounds like Office 2008 should work on your machine. Note that you need
1.5GB of free space on your hard drive to install the software. Also, since
the software comes on a DVD, it would be best to have a machine with a DVD
drive; if you don't have one, it may be possible to access the DVD with
another machine, but that would be more difficult. You should double-check
the system requirements for yourself before making the purchase:

If you bought Office 2004 on or after Sep. 25, 2007 and reside in the U.S.
or Canada, you can get a free copy of Office 2008:
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/go/promotions/default.mspx>

Otherwise, if you purchased a version of Office 2004 previously, you can buy
a new "upgrade" version (or the "Home & Student Edition" if you are
eligible) at a reduced cost. You can then install Office 2008 following the
included instructions; it's not too difficult. It should prompt you to
remove Office 2004 during the installation; otherwise, you can remove it
beforehand by running the "Remove Office" tool located in
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office/

With 512 MB of RAM you hardly have enough RAM to run the OS. You are not
going to see an increase in speed. You will most likely see stalls and
slowdowns. I have G4 Dual 1.42 GHZ, Memory 2GB, Mac OS X 10.5.2 and it runs
OK. If you upgrade your RAM it will be like getting a new computer. Then if
you are interested in getting Office 2008 for it's new features, you should
see decent performance.

You didn't mention how much free space you have on your HD. This can affect
performance also.

Diane thank you! I've never done this before; and I've found your reply
extremely helpful.
