Office 2008: Interface elements vanish if Leopard language is not

M

mosdog-ru

I have found a very disappointing bug in Leopard/Office 2008.

If your interface language in Leopard is Russian (for example) -
you have interface elements vanishing in Office 2008 which makes it unusable.

In other words - if I open anything in Word and start to resize the document
window - interface elements start to disappear. This happens only if specific
languages of Mac OS interface are chosen, like Russian or Polish.

However, if you set it to English or French or German - it works glitch-free
fine. (What's that, some sophisticated ex-communist bloc ban??)

Please suggest.

Another possibility is that some Macs are having trouble with nVidia
graphics cards since the 10.5.2 update. Have you applied the Leopard
Graphics Update 1.0?

I installed most recent updates using Apple Software Update utility (hope that Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 is installed)...
Can you give the specs on your Mac - Model, RAM, etc.?

Well, actually I have the issue on two Apple computers:

Computer 1: MacBook Pro (ZODL); Intel® Core™ Duo 2160 Mhz; 15.4" WXGA; 1024 Mb RAM; 100 Gb HDD; ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, 256 Mb.

Computer 2: MacBook Air (Z0FS); Intel Core™ 2 Duo 1.8 GHz; 13.3"; 2 Gb RAM; 64 Gb SDD; Intel GMA X3100 144 Mb DDR2 SDRAM.
Tinkertool allows you to add the double scroll arrows.
Could you please explain what is "double scroll arrows" and why do I need to "add" them using Tinkertool?
Try logging out/in with the Shift key down.
Unfortunately, no positive result...

Looking back it was Bob that mentioned this. I was just following up with
what could be causing this behavior and other similar behavior that could be
interfering.

Double scroll arrows can be placed at the top and bottom of the scroll bar.
Some people like this added feature. It's optional.

Andrey:

I don't think you will be able to solve this issue until the Service Release
12.1.0 comes out. It is currently in testing, and Microsoft will publish it
as soon as it passes.

Your issue sounds like a known bug that we hope will be addressed by the
service release.

Don't get confused by the numbering: the fix you have is 12.0.1 which is the
"hot fix". We are all waiting on 12.1.0, the Service Release.

Hope this helps

Hi Andrey -

Thanks for the responses - I just wish I had more immediate corrections to
offer. I'm still of the opinion that the 10.5.2 update is what broke the
input, but the only "proof" I have is that I can't reproduce the problem in
10.5.0, but I'm hoping that the 12.1 update to Office will address it for
you. I expect it to be available soon although I can't say exactly when.

In the meanwhile I've included a few additional comments below:

I installed most recent updates using Apple Software Update utility (hope that
Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 is installed)...

I don't know if it is or not. It's listed separately on the Apple downloads
site & since it only pertains to 10.5.2 my Software Update isn't grabbing
it. Perhaps systems running that version do pick it up.
Well, actually I have the issue on two Apple computers:

Computer 1: MacBook Pro (ZODL); Intel® Core™ Duo 2160 Mhz; 15.4" WXGA; 1024 Mb
RAM; 100 Gb HDD; ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, 256 Mb.

No that I'd expect it to correct the current issue, but boosting up the RAM
on this system would definitely be beneficial. Office 2008 running on 10.5
will be far happier with 2 GB:)
Computer 2: MacBook Air (Z0FS); Intel Core™ 2 Duo 1.8 GHz; 13.3"; 2 Gb RAM; 64
Gb SDD; Intel GMA X3100 144 Mb DDR2 SDRAM.

Again, I don't think it will have any effect on the current situation but I
did see several items in Apple's downloads that pertain to the Airs - and
I'm not sure Software Update would pick them up. You might want to verify -
if they've already been installed to your unit you'd usually get a
notification that the update isn't needed if you run it again.

If you don't have it handy the Apple Downloads site is:

Could you please explain what is "double scroll arrows" and why do I need to
"add" them using Tinkertool?

I believe Bob G was referring to the graphic anomaly in one of your videos
and Diane may have been misled by the statement. If you don't have
TinkerTool or some similar haxie it shouldn't matter.
Unfortunately, no positive result...

Again, perhaps the long-awaited Office Update will put things right when it
arrives. The only other suggestion I can offer is to check in Apple
Discussions to see if any similar issues are posted. Maybe you can find a
fix there:
