Office 2008/PC compatibility.

Hi,

I have a macbook running Mac OS X 10.5. I need to choose between Office 2004
and 2008.

I take freelance assignments for which I am sent word documents to edit using
track changes - this functionality is vital.

I need to know whether there would be a problem receiving files (created on
PC and mac, usually older versions), making changes with office 2008 that are
tracked and saved as .doc files with office 2008, and then sending the new .
doc back to the client to accept/reject the changes in older versions of
office.

I'd be grateful to hear of any experience people have of this.

Thanks

Ferkel

Hi Ferkel:

Hold off for now. Stick to 2004 until after the first Service Pack is
issued for 2008 (watch the Microsoft website to see when that will be...)

There's an open bug on problems with Tracked Changes and Comments going
pear-shaped when round-tripping to PC Word.

They will get this fixed, but it may not be soon. They are having trouble
reproducing it.

Cheers

If you do not already own 2004, I'd suggest taking advantage of the Tech
Guarantee--buy 2004 now and get 2008 for S&H:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/go/promotions/default.mspx

Be sure to DOWNLOAD THE MAIL IN COUPON and read the small print about
what you need before spending money, and keep copies/pix. (Although, I'm
not entirely sure where 2004 is still for sale.)

If you already own 2004, stick with it for now--but when/if you get
2008, you do not need to choose between them. I'm running both versions
of Word consistently--Entourage is the only one where you need to choose
one and stick with it.

If you need *anything* that requires Macros and VBA support. don't by
Office 2008.

If you don't used macros and a VBA get 2008 for the XML file compatibility.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

Lets see if I can type that better:

If you need *anything* that requires Macros and VBA support. don't *buy*
Office 2008.

If you don't use macros and VBA get 2008 for the XML file compatibility.

See if that is more readable. Sorry for the confusion.
