Office 2008 Update 12.1.7 Will Not Install

S

slips01

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I downloaded the Update but am getting an error message "A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume."
I found a similar discussion on this forum relating to a prior update, and I looked at the various solutions (repairing permissions, etc). One of my problems seems to be that the install package or disk image does not appear on my desktop or downloads folder (or anywhere else on my hard drive that I can locate) so I cannot use one of the suggested solutions (copying disk image to desktop, etc).
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Download the installer from Mactopia rather than use the autoupdater.

I am having the same problem. I continue to receive the same error message "You cannot install Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume."

I tried the update 12.1.7 first, found out that I needed to install any of the previous update first. I also checked permissions, everything the way it should be. I am also logged in as admin.

I also tried directly downloading the file from Mactopia, copying the content on the desktop and ejecting the installer. Still the same problem.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Michael

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

I would re-install Office.

Follow these steps to reinstall:

* Launch the Microsoft Autoupdater (MAU).To launch MAU, you can open any
Office application and select "Check for Updates" under Help in the Menu
bar. Once MAU is launched, select "Keep in Dock"
* Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down
to disable any startup items.) Be sure all applications are quit before
running updater. IMPORTANT (Do this for each update!!)
* Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
* Empty Trash.
* Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk.
* Restart
* Update to 12.1.0 using MAU
* Restart (restarting before you launch any app is important!)
* Update to 12.1.7 Using MAU
* Restart

Check this file after updating to 12.1.0 to be sure it is version 2.2.0.

I tried this in the mean time, however, no luck. I continue to getting the same error message. I used the Remove Office function in Office 2008 to delete it. I tried the Terminal window installation process too, same thing. Do you think there is a difference between the "remove office" and the actual dragging it into the trash folder?

Yes, it removes preferences and some invisible files. (These don't usually
interfere with updates though.) However, "Remove Office" for 08 does not
remove everything. Which reminds me, did you remove all receipts for Office?
Delete all that start with "Office2008"

"/Library/Receipts"

Doesn't remove Automator actions if I remember correctly. The Microsoft User
Data folder is not touched, but anytime you run something like "Remove
Office" it is recommended to backup everything.

Double check by going over these lists:

Here is an interesting one. I removed Office 2008 and reinstalled the version of Office that I thought I had on there previously. Same errors, except I couldn't use Entourage anymore. As it turned out, I installed the academic version. Then I said shoot and $#&@, now that. I did recall then that I needed to full version of Office, specifically because of Entourage. After removing Office 2008 again, frantically searching for the full version DVD, I installed again Office 2008. Now comes the interesting part, after installation and going through the update, the SP1 would still not install and show the same error message. However, the update 12.1.7 did now install fine. I haven't tested everything but it should be back to normal.

Thanks for your help,
Michael
