Loaded Office 2008 onto my G4 desktop running OS X.5.1.
Opening programs takes forever, and once open there is a horrible lag time between text entered and its appearance on the screen.

Other functionality seems OK...what have I done?

I don't think you have DONE anything. We have severe performance issues
with 2008 running on a G4 right now.

Keep applying the updates as they come out, and in the meantime go back to
Office 2004 and wait.

This issue will be solved, among the earliest fixes to come out. But it's
not there yet. Make sure you keep up-to-date with the latest Apple patches
too: they work hand-in-glove.

Quit all Microsoft applications, track down every instance of Normal
Template on your system and drag it to the desktop, then track down
Normal.dotm and trash that, then empty the trash.

Word will then create a new Normal.dotm on startup. You MUST get rid of all
Normal templates from Office previous, or Word will find them and suck
inappropriate settings out of them.

That will "improve" your load time. It still won't be great.

The typing performance is a confirmed bug, which they are working on.

Hope this helps
