Office 2011 Equation Editor Issues

I am using MS Office 2011 Equation Editor and am having the following
issues:

1. When typing a new equation, the alignment of the equation in the
window is off so that only the top half of the equation shows both
before and after the equation is finished.

2. Equation Editor will not allow me to replace the old row vector
symbol (rightwards arrow) with the new (and correct) row vector symbol
(rightwards harpoon above).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
