Office 2k and Windows XP

I had a stable office 2k premium with all the latest
patches & fixes in place, and all was fine. Then I went
from Windows 98se to Windows XP pro, and that is when the
problems started. WinWord crashes saying bad ram,
although every thing else ran fine, and the h/ware has
not been touched for sometime.
I decided to reinstall Office 2K and thats when it all
went pear shaped! Installing SP1a gives me a Error 1328
applying patch to file XXX where XXX is the file it has
just put in to a temp directory. ;{
Looking through this newsgroup I'm not alone. I have
looked at technet etc and tried many of the fixes, all
failed. How do I completely remove Office 2k (inc all the
reg settings) to 'wipe the slate clean'? Or resolve this
problem!

Many thanks to anyone who can give me an answer.

Picking up on KB 314810, I tried msconfig to disable
EVERYTHING but the Essential items and Windows Installer
in the Services Tab, so no SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, or
Startup items.
Uninstalled Office completely, then deleted the
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office directory,
(careful to back up first).
reinstall from orignal disks, and now I have a working
copy of Office Pro.
Although at this point I don't have any service patches
applied as they still fail, but at least I can work!

Hope that this will be of some use to someone out there.

I did this to save reinstalling loads of s/ware, some of
which I developed my self and lost the source code for. I
normaly get a new disk & rebuld from scratch then bring
stuff over as needed. This time I was in a hurry, needed
to get a report done & the laptop was unavailable at the
time so upgrade this machine's o/s to run some of the
newer apps required for the report, and the rest is
history... As they say hindsight is a wonderful gift.
Do you think that MS takes any action over any of these
issues, or waits forsome to fix them, post them, then
they use the solution as part of the pay as u go support?
Sorry MS but is is fustrating in user land not to be able
to use s/w that costs $/£100's!
