Office 2K Office Update fails

Using Win XP Pro SP2, Office 2K SP3 and IE 7. Trying to use Office
Update and the Active X control is installed. Checking gets to between
91 - 97 percent and then system freezes. I mean HARD freezes! I have
checked the MS KB and there is a troubleshooting article that is sort
of relative( KB 304498). One of the steps is removing the
OfficeUpdate11 folder in C:\Program Files. I don't have this folder
but I do have a OfficeUpdate12 folder under my name folder\Appication
Data in Docs and Settings. It has several cabs.

Can I remove this folder (per the KB) and any thoughts whether it will
help my problem?
