Like many others posting here and elsewhere, I keep getting the "This patch
package could not be opened. . .." or the more terse "The update cannot be
applied" errors whenever I try to apply one of the recent security patches
or use Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs to modify or repair my Office
2000 installation. The knowledgebase article at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q238413 acknowledges
that this problem occurs because Microsoft's patches screw up the registry
and gives links to two versions of a "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility"
that is supposed to fix the problem. Unfortunately, that utility does not
work "on systems where Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later is
installed, including Microsoft Windows XP," and Microsoft provides no
information whatsoever as to how people running Office 2000 on Windows XP,
like me, can fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?
[No, Tom, this is not your Norton Anti-Virus problem. Norton has never been
installed on my machine and I have disabled my AVG antivirus to no effect.]
