I want to update my Office 2000 Pro installation on my new
laptop, which is running XP. I tried installing SR1a via the
download route, but it gave me:
Error 1321. The Installer has insufficient privileges to
modify this file: J:\System\MSRECR40.DLL.
[Cancel] [Retry] [Ignore]
I thought this was a bit odd, given that J: is my CD drive with
the original Office 200 install CD in it, which I assume isn't
writeable. A Sys Admin friend gave me a CD with the SR1a files
on it, which I copied to a temporary directory. Running from
this, I got the same error. If I click on "Ignore", it gives
me:
Internal Error 2318: Please contact product support for
assistance.
Shortly followed by a message that tells me the installation did
not complete successfully, and to contact Microsoft Tech
Support.
It also mentions a log file. When I checked the log file, it
first checks to see what I've got installed, finds my Office
Pro:
Microsoft Office 2000 Professional (9.0.2720), {00010409-
etc.}
Then it finds:
Microsoft Office 2000 Disc 2 (9.0.2720), {00040409-etc.}
Product is patchable.
It says the following patches are applicable:
Office 2000 SR-1 Core Update, {0DC0F122-etc.}
Location: I:\WUTemp\data1.msp
Office 2000 SR-1 CD2 Update, {C406FA02-etc.}
Location: I:\WUTemp\data2.msp
It says my version of IE is OK, and then starts the application
of the patches:
Installing patch in product {00010409-etc.}.
Command line: PATCH=I:\WUTemp\data1.msp….
(extremely long command line truncated for brevity)
Patch applied (1603).
Searching installed products.
And that's where it ends. No real useful info to be found.
I searched the Knowledge Base and found an article on Office XP
SP3 which mentions Error 1321 (KB-232143). It says the 1321
error can occur when "access to the CD-ROM has been denied for
the locally logged on user. This behavior can occur if the
<Restrict CD-ROM access to the locally logged on user only>
policy has been enabled or if the policy has been set in the
registry. The current user will not be able to install Office XP
SP3 or to update from the CD-ROM."
I had set this policy to restrict access, but the fix (which is
a registry edit to change the policy back, rather than just
telling you to change it back in Control Panel) doesn't help.
There was a news group thread about this problem back in May,
and Jagadesh recommended finding a hidden directory called
"MSOCache" and editing the registry so that "LocalCacheDrive"
points to the drive it's on instead of the CD. Unfortunately,
searching my system for hidden files & folders fails to find
this directory anywhere.
At this point, I've tried installing 5 times with the same
result. It still makes no sense to me that the installation
routine would try to WRITE to my Office CD.
Anybody got a fix or a suggestion for this one?
Thanks!
