I want to use my old files mainly Word 97 on a new
computer. Best way to do this? The CD drive on old
computer not working. Would the files by usable, or
couldn't they be opened in XP?

The only thing that XP provides that *may* be able to open them is teh
very simple program called Wordpad. XP, nor any previous versions of
Windows or DOS, provide the product Word.

To work with Word 97 DOC files, you need Word 97 or one of later
versions of Word. Alternatively you need some other or 3rd party
program, separate from Word and XP, that will deal with these files, e.g
OpenOffice, WordPerfect, Works, etc.

Why not just install Word 97 on your new computer? You have it. Use it.

Or get another program (buy or get a free one).
