Tried updating your chipset and graphics card drivers? If
it's a Dell PC, as your comments suggest, you can get help
at Dells website or if you know what the parts are you can
go directly to Intel website for chipset drivers and
to "whoevers" website for graphics card drivers. Also make
sure you run Windows update to ensure you're Windows
version is bang upto date. You can't run an Office update
with Office 97, but you can still get downloads for the
software at "office.microsoft.com". Download SR-2b and
some of the other fixes and updates if you've not already
applied them.
Office 97s compatibility with Win XP Pro is pretty good,
in many respects better than Office XP (which is without
doubt the flakiest version of Office ever).

I have a new machine with XP pro. My office 97 blanks out
the screen for about 10 seconds when I open or close an
application, ie., Word, Excel, etc. Dell was no help at
all and Microsoft was not any better( they told me, after
getting $35.00) that they no longer supported 97.
