Office 97 - English & French versions on same Win2000 machine?

John Smith

Currently have Office 97 Pro English version installed on Win2000.

Need to install Office 97 French version on the same machine and be able to
use both English & French versions (not simultaneously).

Are there any installation issues to be concerned about, ie. install the
French version in a special folder, eg. \Program Files\French Office rather
than in \Program Files\Office, and so on?

This dual-install worked fine under Win95 without conflicts.
English office was installed in the default folder, while the French version
was installed under a user specified path...\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\French\....

Separate icons on the desktop launched the correct version. Spell check,
etc... worked fine for the respective versions worked correctly

Is there any reason this should not work correctly under Win2000?

TIA

Unless there is a flood of similar questions on this topic today, I think I
answered your post elsewhere.

Hi John,

Office 97 English and French versions use the same file
names with different content for the same files. Some of
these are installed in Windows folders and running two
language versions on the same boot partition isn't supported.

You may want to consider using a dual boot configuration
in Windows.

Naieve question:

So how come it worked perfectly under Win95 with the english version
installed in one folder and the French version in another folder? If what
you suggest is true, then my dual install under 95 should not have worked
either. Perhaps I should clarify as well....I'm really only concerned about
Word operating correctly under both languages...I don't really care whether
the French version of Excel, Access, etc... operates or operates correctly.

Please correct me if I am wrong - the installer program on the Office 97 cd
will install the same programs, dll's, etc...and make the same registry
entries irrespective of the OS. If that is the case, then barring any
'weirdness' with Win2000, the install program will install Office 97 the
same on 200 as it did on 95 and hence ought to work

Thanks for any further thoughts.

No. The DLLs and registry entries installed by succeeding versions of Office
typically vary as the complexity of the programs grows, and different
optimizations of file layout are made. The changes between Office 97 and
Office 2000 in particular were quite sizeable. The Windows version some
difference, but Windows 95 and Windows 2000 are built off quite different
bases.

You are free to experiment, but I wouldn't do it on a production system, and
to be perfectly honest you probably won't have much luck coming here for
further advice on the matter since very few MVPs would be running such old
configurations.
