Office 97 file overwriting error

A

Andrew Douglas

For the last few years we have been running Office 97 on a
Windows 2000 network with no problems.

We recently purchased a dozen Compaq Deskpro d530 PCs
running Windows XP.

We have installed Office 97 on these, however, they seem
to have a strange, inconsistent problem. Sometimes when a
user is running Word or Excel and they try to save amends
to a file, they get a message saying that there has be a
file sharing violation and that they cannot overwrite the
file. They have to do a "save as", delete the original
and rename the new file.

This only happens on the new Compaqs, and we have a number
of other PCs with exactly the same operating system and
version of Office that work fine. All of the new machines
suffer from this problem to a greater or lesser degree.

Has anyone else encountered this and does anyone have a
solution.

Thanks

Andrew
