Incorrect as per the following article:
Products that qualify for the Office upgrade
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;158069&Product=ofw97
The OP will need to contact Microsoft for assistance with this as they do
provide a fix so Office 97 upgrade can be installed.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Mercury asked:
| It will not work because Works 7 is not a qualifying product. How do
| you expect OF97 to know about products that were not in existence
| when it was produced. You will have to buy a new version of Office,
| if you do not have a qualifying product listed.
|
| || have you tried putting the disk for ms works 7.0 into the
|| cdrom drive when setup is trying to detect the previous
|| verions? usually that will work.. if it allows you to
|| browse you can also point the windows insatller (what is
|| looking for the previous version) to the cdrom drive and
|| it should pick up on you copy of msworks
|| GOOD LUCK!

||| I'm trying to install Office 97 on my XP laptop. Setup
||| fails to recognize MS Works 7.0 as a qualifying program,
||| even though article KB158069 states that later versions
|| of
||| Works are qualifying.
||| Does anyone know how to get around? The KB article says
||| this is a known issue, but does not say how to resolve
|| it.
||| Thanks.
