Office 97 install on new XP machine

I am a licensed user of Office 97 upgrade. I am
upgrading to a new computer and want to install the
upgrade on the new machine. Although the new machine has
Microsoft Works on it, the Office 97 installer doesn't
recognize it and won't install. What do I need to do
short of purchasing Office XP?
