Office 97 installation

I recently sold my aged Compaq Presario computer which was
running Windows 95. Before the sale, I cleaned the hard
drive to return it to its original configuration.

One of the programs which I removed was Microsoft Office
97 Professional Edition, CD Key 8089-0153732.

Last week I purchased a new Compaq Presario laptop model
R3120US. When I attempted to install Office 97 on the new
computer, I was given the message that I was not licensed
to that computer. All subsequent installation trials have
failed, as the computer fails to autoinstall or even run
the setup file.

Needless to say, I am disappointed as I am unable to
access many of my existing files.

How can this be accomplished? I should not have to buy
new software just to access my old database files.

Thank you

If the CD was an OEM disk purchased with the earlier computer, then -
according to its terms of use - it was indeed licensed only for that
computer. That's why it's cheaper; it's bundled with the machine.

However, there is a bug in Access97 which gives a bogus "license"
message. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191224 for an
explanation and a getaround to solve it, if it is indeed a valid
retail Office disk.
