Office 97: Mystery: Delay closing files!!

A

André

Hi, you wizards of the MS land, please try to help this mortal if you
can!

All applications of OFFICE, especially WORD, have been increasing the
time needed to close a file.
E.g. I can open any file in WORD in a fraction of second, I can save the
same file just as fast, but when I try to CLOSE the file, or to SAVE AS
(to a different file with different name) the computer just stops for
some 12 seconds!!!! Just stops, without any HD access (IDE led off).
It won't even let me minimize all applications to let me work in
something else while I wait. The OFFICE application which is trying to
close the file won't let me do anything else but wait.
It wasn't like that when I installed it some years ago! What can I do?

Thank you very much.

Is Outlook's Journaling turned on? If so, that can be the problem. Not
exactly sure where the setting is in Outlook 97... but try Tools - Options -
Journal Options, and remove any checks next to the Office applications
listed there (Excel, Word, etc.)

As I recall, in Office 97, if Journaling of Office documents is enabled, the
overhead makes closing (sometimes opening, too) very slow.

Thank you, Herb,

But the only type of LOGs I found in Outlook 97 are under [Tools - Options -
Maintenance -- Trouble solving] where you have the option to enable 4 types of
LOG : e-mail, news, http, imap. Found no LOG of the other office applications.
(I believe that "Journaling" which you mention refers to some type of LOG. But
my applications are not in English, so I could be wrong)
Anyway, I believe my case is something else, for I have not the least problem
opening files. My problem is only when closing ("close" or "save as"). Maybe it
is related to WIN 98, but with other application (other than office) I have no
problem.

Thank You again.

No, I'm not referring to logs. I believe that the following describes the

Thank You Very Much, Herb!!

That solved it!! It is great not to wait 15 seconds every time you save a
file!!!
Just for the record: my native language is Portuguese, not French, and so is the
office I was working with.

Thank You,
Bye
