Office 97 - on XP Pro - Error Message: The sys file is not suitab

I need to run Access 97 on my OS XP Pro - I am getting an error:
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and MS Windows applications." Is there anyway around this?

have installed Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, you may encounter other
problems during the Office 97 installation... if it happens, write back.
