Office 97 Open File Dialog box slow to populate

Can anyone tell me how to get the Open File box to refresh more quickly?
When I am runing CPU-intensive applications along with Word or Excel and
when I use the Open File or Save As boxes, it takes forever for the box to
show any files or folders. and if I need to browse to a different folder I
have to wait again for the folders to load.

I know that my CPU is busy when this happens, but other applications Open
Files dialogue boxes don't seem to have the same problem. Is this just a
limitation with Office 97, and do more recent version of Office eliminate
this problem?
