I'm getting a message when installing Office 97 Pro on a new WinXP Pro
box

"Htmlmarq.ocx was unable to register itself in the system registry"

I'm guessing I have to go and edit some permissions, any idea where in
the registry?

...... not ideal but if I disable the Web Authoring option in setup then
it worksaround the issue (this user does not require that feature)

I'm guessing I have to go and edit some permissions, any idea
where in the registry?

I've found only one fix, uninstall SP2, install Office97, install ALL
updates to Office97* and then re-install SP2. It's the only way I've
found to make it work, MS has no fix so far.

AFAIK Office97 will work fine with SP2, but it will NOT install. Go
figure?

*You'll get new and different errors if you try to install SR2 after
SP2 so do ALL the updates before putting SP2 back on the machine!

Steve,

This problem arises with most old Microsoft software. SP2 is designed to force customers buy new software. Office 97 is 7 years old and so according to uncle Bill it should be replaced even if you want to use it for basic spreadsheet or wordprocessing purposes. You have to understand that if software packages are not replaced regularly, then Microsoft can't make any money. Why should customers continue using the same software for life?.

The alternative is to have self destruct button so that after every 3 years the software will not install. Perhaps uncle Bill is worried of Anti-trust commission!
