Strange one here, Have a client with Win95 on his
system. Office 97 installed. When he double clicks on a
Word doc or an Excell sheet they open with what looks to
be all the page formatting comands written out out. Now if
you close thease same documents and open them from the
File \ last viewed section they will open normally. Any
ideas what could have gotten checked by mistake?

I only checked one Excel File But it did show the same
symptom. Turned a small a 1 page doc into about 10 pages
of giberish. Even pulled up a couple of registry keys.

Hi Steve,

Do they open correctly if you use File/Open?

If so then you might try recreating the file associations. Go to
Start/Run and run:

winword /r
excel /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.

The only way they will open correctly is if they are
opened from the last 4 files viewed list.

Okay, try starting Word using the /a switch and Excel using the /s
switch:

Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a
Excel /s

Then try opening the files using File/Open. If they open correctly
then start the applications without the switch, go to
Tools/Macro/Macros

For Word see if there is a macro along the lines of FileOpen macro is
the list.

For Excel the macro would be named something like Workbook_Open.

The /a and /s worked like a charm. The file types had
gotten switched to the wrong setting so it was opening the
backup copy in the display.

Hi Steve,

Glad to hear all is working again. :)

Out of curiosity, did you find a macro as the cause? I don't quite
follow what you mean by the file types getting switched unless you are
intercepting the Open events with a macro.
