Office 97 - small office

I purchased a pentium II computor with windows 98 already
installed. I than purchased MS Office 97 separately, but
cannot install it. The error says: "This version of
office 97 small business edition will load only on
versions of the operating system which have been
preinstalled by the PC manufacturer."

What does this mean? And, how do I fix it?

From where did you purchase this version of Office? It means that it's only
licensed to be used on the computer it was sold with - i.e it's OEM. The
only way you can fix it is to purchase a full retail licence. As 97 is no
longer sold and, depending on the specs of your computer it may have
problems with XP, then your only choice is to trawl Ebay for a full retail
version of either 97 or 2000 - but be sure to check the auction carefully -
it really is a case of 'buyer beware'.
