Office 97 Type-over /Over-type

Until recently when editing in Office 97 if I hit the
insert key I could type-over the already existing text.
This seems to gone away and everything I type now gets
inserted prior to the already existing text?

I have gone into tool/options/edit and Type-over text is
checked. (I am not at all sure this is what I am supposed
to be changing)?

Can anyone help with this?

MS Office 97/98 SR-1 resolves this problem among others
for thoughs who may eant to know.
