Office 97 upgrade fails because it can't find prequalifying product

A very long time ago, I bought this Office 97 upgrade. Then
quite some time ago I got a new computer running XP, moved,
and threw away the original MS Office 97 box and books,
thinking all I needed was the disk.

Now many many months later, I'm trying to avoid buying a
new license or upgrade. How can I find out what product I
need in order to install this apparent "competitive"
upgrade of Office 97?
