Office 97 upgraded to Office 2000 under XP and DATE doesn't work

Tried opening old budget file with date column which I inceremented by week
i.e. cell A4 + 7 but nothing happens and date is now just caharectes, Have
gone into foramt and custom to setup dd/mmm/yyyy for the column but no change
?
