Office 97 vs. WinXP O/S

We have a few people whose computers have been upgraded to
Windows XP and we are still using Office 97 SP-2. There
seems to be some compatibility issue regarding the Office
programs and the O/S in that a document (Word especially)
looks fine while inputting but after a save, the page has
a lot of miscellaneous characters. Has anyone else run
into this situation? Any ideas, comments?
