Office 97 + Windows XP Home

I have a new computer and I get the following error message when I try to
install Office 97 with XP Home Ed. "16 bit windows subsystem",
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications."
I know that Office97 does run with XP. Can anyone help?
