Office 97 with Windows XP

If I upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP, will I be
able to install and use my existing Office 97 package? I
currently have Works, Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint
installed and would like to continue using them.

Yes. Just upgrade Windows and your Office programs will keep working.

My experience prompts me to recommend that you uninstall 97 before you
upgrade and reinstall afterwards.

Hi Edward,

Interesting. :) I'm curious to know what you encountered.

One item *does* comes to mind and that is 'broken' Office File Types.
There have been several reports that all of the Office 97 file
associations break on spaces in the file name when opening a document
from an Exploring window. I'm not 100% certain but I suspect it was
due to upgrading Windows.

btw, this problem is simple to rectify and Office doesn't have to be
uninstalled/reinstalled. It's just a matter of recreating the file
type using the following commands:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.
