Office 97 XP Home

Will Office 97 work with XP Home? I have original, unused
discs for Office 97 Professional that I got with my
preloaded Dell in 1997. Can I use these to install in a
new system or do I have to buy a more up to date version?

Yes Office 97 will work work XP Home edition.
After installation, go to the Microsoft web site and download the program
updates for Office 97

Office 97 works fine on XP. You say they are original and unused -- meaning it
is an OEM version that was preloaded on your Dell? Technically if it is an
OEM version, it is tied to that Hardware and Dell may have made some
modification

Thanks for reponding Layla. Yes the CD's are unused in
their original still sealed packaging. The product ID #
has the letters OEM in it - is ID the same as product key?
These CD's couldn't have been installed in my current
computer as the package is unopened. Go figure.

I'm about to order a new Dell but I don't want to buy
another version of Office if I can use the disks I have.
My machine was set up by an IT dept where I worked (now
retired) - they must have had masters or something. I
don't know.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm about to order a new Dell
but I didn't want to order Office if the unused package I
have will do the trick. I'm told I need a product key to
make them work - would that be the same as the Product ID#
on the Certificate of Authenticity?

Another opinion.

I don't think the OEM discs will work on a new computer in spite of the fact
they are "sealed and unused". OEM software is usually tied to the computer
legally and otherwise. That's why OEM copies of software are so cheap.

The seller could have installed Office97 from his own set and gave you a
recovery set.

Product ID is not the same as Product Key.

If you still have Office97 installed on your computer you can use AIDA32 to
find the Product Key and you could try it with the discs on your new computer.

I'm not holding my breath, though.

Browse under Software>Licences to find MS Office PK.

Paul, I have similar dilemma. See my 2/29 post. I lost

the 20-digit product code (on sepatrate Cert. of Auth.)
but have my 2 MS 97 Discs that have XL which I wish to
use with my new XP Home, but the CD's won't load without
the code.

I don't see why you cannot use your discs if you can load
them.

CD code for Office is on the CD case not a cert of auth. -- the Cert of Auth
was for the OS
