I installed XP on my pc (not upgrade but override Win98).
I backed up all of my Word, Excel, etc,files onto a disc
prior to installing XP. When I copied these files back
onto the pc I get the following message every time I open
any of them. "C:\...\ (file mane).doc is being used by (my
name). Do you want to make a copy?" I can click cancel and
everything seem to work but it's very annoying.

I suspect the reason is that when you "backed up" you used a CD-R. All
files become Read-only on a CD-rom. So when you copy them back the
read-only is set. R-click on a file you have not edited yet and look at
properties. You may uncheck the read-only attribute there.
