Office 98 printer problems in Mac OS X

I have a G5, OS 10.2.7. I loaded Office 98 for the mac on
and am unable to have it recognize my Epson Stylus 740i
printer. The printer does not show under the chooser.
When the print monitor comes up, it shows one of the
printers selected in the chooser, which I do not have. My
Epson is missing. The funny thing is that all other
applications print.
Anyone out ther knows what is going on? I do not want to
pay for another version of Office.

Did you install the Classic drivers for your printer? If I recall
correctly, Classic doesn't use the OS X printing system. That means you
need to install the Classic drivers, and then re-select the printer in the
Chooser. You aren't experiencing this in most applications since most run
natively in OS X and use the OS X printing system, that includes drivers for
your printer. You should be able to find the Classic drivers you need at
the Epson web site.

I guess, since it's a G5 you can't boot in 9, but what
would happen if you tried to run a classic version of the
epson driver installer within classic?

It is odd that the chooser wouldn't show it, and it
doesn't suprise me when you say that it won't print - if
the OS doesn't see it, why would an application??

You said it was funny that all the other applications
print. Are all your "other applicaitons" classic too? or
are they running within X?

Epson indicates that their latest drivers w/ respect to
you computer for OS X came on the install disk, or factory
installation, in your case...no doubt, if your printing
from other apps, you have correctly "added a printer"
within X.

As you can't boot in 9 and run an installer, correctly
adding the printer in X should be enough....

Apple had this to say:

Note: Before a third-party printer will appear in the
Classic Chooser, you must start up from your Mac OS 9
System Folder and install the required printer drivers. If
your computer only starts up in Mac OS X, contact the
manufacturer of the printer driver for a Mac OS X version
or more information.

Perhaps deleting the printer and re-adding it would help?
it would only take a moment, if this doesn't work, I'm
stuck...

I don't know if you could run a 9 driver install inside
classic...I'm guessing it wouldn't allow you, but you
could try...and I would hope it wouldn't screw things up,
make sure you have anything you've created backed up, and
then give it a whirl...worst that could happen is having
to use system restore disks....

good luck
