Office Academic Versions

I have a question.

Why can you buy Office 2003 Student and Teachers and install it on up
to 3 computers but you can not do this with Academic versions of
Standard or Pro?

Why? You'll need to ask Microsoft. But keep in mind S&T is for families of
students of any age and academic is sold only to college students/teachers
and home users tend to use the programs less.

I believe the academic version allows two installs on systems used primarily
by the student, same as the retail version allows.

The reason why I asked. A friend of mine is a local Elementary school
teacher. Apparently the school does not get a lot of funding. She was
asking me about the difference in the Office products that carry the
Academic stickers. She was talking to the school board members and she
was granted to bring her own computer to her classroom. She said she
had an extra Desktop system that she could donate to the school. She
also owns a laptop computer that she now uses at home.

So as she is a teacher she does qualify for the Academic versions of
Office. She said she would rather get the Pro version of office. And
was wondering if she could install it on the computer she would donate
to the school and istall it on the laptop that she uses at home.

I told her I do not know if this could be done and I would ask on the
Office newsgroups.

The academic licences sold in schools/colleges are subject to the same
licensing restrictions as those sold retail - i.e. one desktop and one
laptop, providing they are not in simultaneous use.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for posting here!

As I know, Office 2003 includes several editions as below:

Office 2003 Editions include:
o Microsoft Office Professional Enterprise Edition 2003
o Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003
o Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003
o Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003
o Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003 (only available preinstalled on new
computers)
o Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003

And here is the difference between each edition:

Please understand that Students and Teachers edition is for noncommercial
use only. Thus, it can be activated for three times.

And I think you may need to buy Academic-license for Office Professional
edition if you want to install it on more than 2 computers.

Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing

I hope the information helps. Have a nice day!

Thanks to all that replied. I will pass this on to my teacher friend.
She will be very grateful.

I myself did not know you could install one version of Office on no
more than 2 computers provided they are not used simultaneously. I
only have used Word myself. I do not know the Excel stuff and have no
need for Access.

Thanks again,

Bill

Note that the teachers and students version is for home use only - she can't
install it on a computer at school - the school needs to buy the academic or
other volume license.
