Hi all. I've looked through this group and I hope I haven't missed an answer
to this question. Why do certain Office and Outlook updates change the
default email program? It's exceedingly annoying and downright rude. I'll
explain:
A client with 50 WXP SP2 PCs uses Lotus Notes (yikes!) as their email
program and thus sets it as the default in Internet Options\Programs when
they install a box. They also use Office 2003 Basic and do full installs as
some of their people love using Outlook's calendar. Recently they installed
Office 2003 SP2 and discovered that it had changed the email program in
Internet Options\Programs to Outlook! After much cursing, they manually
changed all the boxes back to Lotus Notes only to have a recent Outlook patch
do the same damn thing.
Microsoft should not be changing a user-set value such as this one when
installing security updates, much less service packs.
Does anyone know how to avoid this problem in the future. Does anyone from
Microsoft have an explanation/solution?
TIA folks!
