Office and Panther

Gary Tuck

Did a clean install of Panther last night on my laptop (12" Rev A) Then
I reinstalled Office X. Installation went fine but the Office updaters,
e.g., Office 10.1.2 Update launch but then stall when searching for
resources. Tried installing twice, repairing permissions, etc. So, I'm
left with the original programs---yuck. Any thoughts or experinces?

TIA, Gary

Where did you install Office? It's supposed to be in the Applications or
~/Applications folder.

It's possible you will need to launch Entourage and enter your cd key before
it will update. I know the installer looks for pirated numbers and will not
update those copies. If you have no number it might consider this the same
as a pirated number and quit.

The fix is pretty simple. The 10.1.2 updater stalls simply because it is
looking of the office apps in all available drives (including the idisk
(and the software section of iDisk) which is automounted in Panther).

The Solution ... simply disconnect from the internet while updating
10.1.2. The other updates 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 should update without problems.

Hope this helps

I read a note in OSX Hints that suggested that you will need to
disconnect from the Internet before attempting to install update
10.1.2. Give that a try if you haven't already discovered this
yourself.

I had the same problem and managed to solve it by unplugging my
ethernet cable. I do not have an idisk or a .mac account, but I guess
that doesn't matter. My office suite is now successfully updated. :)

I wish that Microsoft would put information about Office compatibility
with Panther on the main Mactopia page. As far as I can see, the only
recognition they have of Panther's existence is a link to Apple. I don't
think that most non-savvy computer users would be able to find their
way to this forum....
