Office applications open very slowly from shortcuts

We have a user running Office 97 on a Windows 2000
machine. The Office applications, especially Word, open
VERY slowly when trying to open them through either the
Office Shortcut Bar or through a shortcut placed onto the
desktop. What happens is that there is a VERY long pause
(30 seconds or so) between the time the icon is clicked
until the applciation's opening screen appears. The only
way they open properly is through Start...Programs....
We've uninstalled and re-installed Office 97 several
times, still no difference. It's not that big a deal,
just kind of a nuisance for the user. But any ideas why
that might be?

Is the anti-virus software interferring? In Norton, you can turn off
the Office-add in to test.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

We're not running Norton as our anti-virus, but I'll still
give it a try. The PC in question is located in another
town, but I'll let you know when I try it. Thanks for the
quick response!

or another anti-virus (norton only offered as example). Other root cause
seems to be related to viruses/spy-bot programs.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
