office apps crash with runitme error and event 1000 id

a client cannot open a word or excel document. the
office xp app will close with a vbs runtime error...
[option to send a report to microsoft]. there are some
corresponding "event id 1000" occurrences in the
application log involving winword. i have tried
uninstalling and re-installing office XP... no luck. any
help is appreciated. thank you.
