office assistant could not be started...

OK, probably not the first time this question has been raised, but to date I
have not seen a solution. Getting error:

'the office assistant could not be started. plaese repair the assistant by
running office 2000 setup and selecting repair office 2000'

Appears on all office apps.
Tried a repair, a reinstall, an un-install reinstall...
Anybody have a sure fire resolution?
