Office Assistant not working

The Office Assistant is not always starting in word 2000. We have some
software that uses word to mail merge documents. When the oficce assistant
opens with word the merge works. When it doesn't open the merge doesn't
work. We have uninstalled rebooted the pc and reinstalled word.

I'm at the end of what I know. The OS is Windows2000 Pro
