Office Assistant

I have Office 2000 standard on a Windows XP Pro. Recently,
I don't know how long' everytime I click on "Show Office
Assistant" I receive "Send Error Report" and afterward
Office (word, PP or Excel) closes. Now I noticed that if I
click on Chart in Excel, does the same thing. I was living
without the Assistant, but now seems to be affecting other
functions. I have uninstalled and reinstalled with all
updates, twice. Same thing. I cannot find anything about
this problem on Knowledge base. Yes, I read the one about
Assistant crashing and the second CD. I don't have second
CD as this is Standard, which does not use second CD.
Any ideas?

I don't know what fixed it, but I turned off System
restore, uninstalled Office, rebooted, tried to edit
register to remove all traces of Office. Didn't get very
far but I rebooted and reinstalled with all updates and
office assistant is back as well as the Chart button in
Excel.
I suspect it was System restore turned off that may have
fixed it.
Anyway, I thought I would update my own question, in case
someone else runs into this problem.

Mike thanks for your post. A colleague has the same problem as you had, I have sent him your actions and hopefully this will correct his problem.
