I too have the same problem. Inintially Office update was working fine and
I have to reinstall the Office suite after replacing some corrupted files
and now it did not want to do the office update. Followed the instruction on
KB304498 from
1 till 9. Still is not able to perform updates. The system goes and check
for update and stop at 40% and then comes back with "Office Update is unable
to check for updates." Please advise

Is there a registery key that needs to be deleted or modify?? Any help is
appreciated. Our software was bought throught CDW on a volume license.

Hi, bezee28,

What's wrong with steps 10-11, or the suggestion to run the Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility that has been posted here several times?

Hi Susan,

I have tried 10 and that did not work, on 11 the network connection is
working because we have a spare computer and did an office update on that
computer and it went through without a problem. So that rules out 11. I
have tried the Windows
Installer Cleanup utility and clean up "MS Office Prof. 2003" and
reinstalled Office 2003 prof onto my workstation. Tried to update and when
checking for updates it stops again at the 40% mark while checking for
updates.

Is there any other possible trouble shoot procedure that I can do to get
this updates running??

Tried the "manual"update and it loaded up and then it stop and and error pop
up saying that the updates are not complete. I tried individual update for
the different Office apps and it is the same. Do you know if there is a code
that is hard coded in the OS or Office apps that is stopping updates to be
installed? Contacting Microsoft Product support cost $$$. I personally,
do not think I should have to pay for support when we already paid for a
product that should be in working order, that's my 2 penny worths.

Susan, Thanks for your help.

No, sorry I don't know, and I don't think that's the case...

I understand about contacting Microsoft, but peer support can only take you
so far in this instance. If you've tried all their recommended
troubleshooting steps, I don't know what else to recommend for the time
being, with the exception of a reformat and re-installation of your system.

Sorry I couldn't help you resolve this one--

I'm getting the exact same thing on two computers at home. I've gone through
all the instructions on "How to troubleshoot failures updating your Office
installation from the Office Update website" with no luck at all. I've
uninstalled office and re-installed and still no luck.

I've googled this and found other people in the same boat. There must be
something left in the registry that triggers this error. What is
disappointing is the link from the error message for MS help doesn't work.
Other people have this problem too.

3 hours into this and it is very annoying. I bought from Dell
