Office Communicator suddenly closes when I switch to an incoming m

I use communicator all the time - if I'm in a conversation and switch focus
to another application - when I return, the IM window and communicator shut
down. It doesn't matter which application I switch to - sometimes it's
another IM window. I can find no consistency.

Also - how do I retrieve the conversations that have closed? Sometimes there
is information in them that I haven’t recorded.
