Office Comp. Pack

I downloaded High-Priority/Required updates to
desktop running Office XP Pro 2002
notebook running Office XP Pro 2003
and then downloaded the Comp Pack to both machines.

I also downloaded Excel Viewer for 2007 to both machines.

Only the Viewer on the the desktop (2002) is functional.

On the notebook (2003) the xlviewer.exe can be identified but will not
extract.

Despite several repeated downloads of the updates and the Comp Pack files.
neither machine can open Excel 2007 documents.

The install process seemed to be complete, but there is no evidence of the
Comp Pack files in my Add/Remove Programs lists.

Am I correct to assume that the Comp Pack should enable my 2002/2003
machines to open Excel 2007 files directly from these Excel programs?
Thanks.

I don't understand, as you have both Office 2002 and 2003 why you downloaded
the VIEWERS.
The Office Compatibility Pack will install on both Office 2002 and 2003.

Thanks, Gordon, for your comments. The Comp Pack should install but it
doesn't.
For background, I have a group of about 20 people working on a volunteer
data collection project for a non-profit using Excel (2000, 2002, 2003,
2007). Upgrading everyone to Office 2007 is not an option so I am
investigating the best way we can all be compatible. Excel Viewer is not an
option since it can not edit or save workbooks/worksheets.

Having those with E 2007 'Save As' to an earlier version is not a good
solution. I need to be able to get the Comp Pack working on my two machines
(2002, 2003) so I can see how it works and if it will solve our problem.

Has anyone had similar problems with installing the Comp Pack? Could it be
that the High Priority/Required updates are not installing fully even though
they appear to be? Is there a way to verity this? Thanks.

In case anyone is interested, my problem has been solved. I downloaded the
Comp. Pack to 2 computers several days ago, but they did not show up in my
Add/Remove Programs lists until today! Also, I discovered that in order to
use the Comp. Pack, you need to right-click the Excel 2007 file from its hard
drive location, select "Open With" and then select "Microsoft Open XML
Converter". A window displays indicating the conversion is taking place and
the file appears on my Excel 2003 screen. BTW, the "Open With" menu also
includes "Microsoft Excel Viewer" which I had previously downloaded. I find
it strange that in all the information I found on the Comp. Pack, there was
nothing about how to open/run it.

There may be other explanations/solutions but this worked. I rarely use
"Open With" and the last time I used it was for hyperlinks in Excel cells -
lesson learned!

Hi Fletch,

You should be able to also use File=>Open in Excel as well to open Excel 2007 files. Unlike Word you may not see a separate listing
for Excel 2007 files but the 'All Excel' files includes *.XL* as one of the file types to display.

When you save you would have a separate choice to save in Excel 2007 format.
