I've just installed MS Office X on a Macintosh G3 iBook running
10.8.2. I can get through the windows that ask for my name, etc., but
when trying to actually start the program, it hangs while "optimizing
font name performance". Then it unexpectidely quits. I've trie
throwing away the preference folder -- no help. HELP.

Try checking for corrupt fonts. You can find a detailed procedure at the
McGimpsey & Associates web site.
<http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/troubleshooting.html#fonts>

If that doesn't work, try repairing permissions.
For OS 10.2/10.3:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

Run Disk First Aid. Instructions on how to run it in OS X are located on
the Apple Knowledge Base.

I have a similar problem, maybee someone can help

I have installed Office 2004 on OSX 10.3.6 on my PowerPC G4, but after
succsessful installation it won´t work properly.
All the programs except Word starts fine, but Word hangs with the
start logo. I have tried several measures, but dont manage to get past
this point. The following have been done:
-Remove all versions of Office and reinstall 2004
-Turn off all fonts
-repair access rights
After removing Office, and installing only Word, Word starts with
-Installing fonts
-etc
-Optimizing font meny performance
And it never gets past that point (once it also stopped on Visual
basic for applications, but I don´t manage to reproduce that)

On my prior X version of Office, Word was really slow to start, but it
started eventually. Therefore there may be some leftovers from that.
On my office PC with XP, Word is also slow, but that has something to
do with it searching for printer information it cannot find (And
cannot resolve..)
Do you have any tips or links to follow?

This sounds exactly like a corrupt font. Are you sure you turned off all
fonts? Did you turn off Classic fonts?

YES, I checked it once more in the Fontbook, and it says that the only
active fonts are under Maskin (guess thats computer in the english
version). Geneva and Lucida Grande are the only active fonts and these
are not possible to turn off. All other including Classic (OS 9) are
deactivated at the top level.

You could have damaged or duplicate fonts. What I would do is download the
fully functional demo version of FontAgent Pro. It's excellent at ferreting
out problem fonts and sticking them in a "Problem Fonts" folder. That might
save you the hassle of having to re-install the OS.
