Whenever I open any Microsoft Office 2008 application I get the "Microsoft App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I can't find any solution online that is working, what should i try?

~Thanks

Well it could be a few things:
- corrupted font cache. You can delete the Office font cache (in
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft) or the system and user font cache (use
a utility like Onyx to do that).
- corrupted font... Font Book is a good starting point to look into that
(it has a font validation command).
- corrupted preferences (same folder as the office font cache)
- corrupted installation (use the uninstaller to uninstall then
reinstall Office, and the 12.1.0 the 12.2.0 udpate)

I have the same issue. Font caches are cleared but don't fix the issue.

I cannot even start the uninstaller. It immediately crashes.

Also... switching to a different user yields no difference.

The logo flashes out as if it were expanding and then.... crash-o-matic

Use "Remove Office" then reinstall.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/remove_office.html>

Install Office for Mac 2008 including updates
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/install_update_2008.html>

I suggest downloading the Apple combo updater and running it prior to
reinstalling.

Download the combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using
Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update (For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )

I tried the steps listed above, including the Combo Update. It did not fix the issue.

So... I "fixed" my immediate problem - the apps open up for me now. Thank the good Lord (and my common sense) that I had a good image backup from a few days ago. I deleted the "Microsoft Office 2008" folder under my Applications and simply dragged the older version back over.

Works like a charm and you can be assured I won't be applying the update until other, braver souls figure this one out.

I think you just answered my question. I am not about to install SP2 until Microsoft gets its "stuff" (not the word I had in mind) together.
